Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery

Today’s post consecrates around drawing wrinkles in clothing. Some of you may have already recognized the title of this article.

“Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery” is a book written by Byrne Hogarth. If you are interested in drawing you should definitely check out his book collection. Some of his books are “Dynamic Figure Drawing”, “Dynamic Anatomy”, “Drawing the Human Head”, “Dynamic Light and Shade” and “Drawing Dynamic Hands”. Byrne Hogarth is particularly famous for his illustration work at the Tarzan comic strip.

These are some of the exercises you will see in the book. Basically the pressure point dictates were the wrinkles will flow. You can see the arrows showing the flow of the wrinkles. Here they are:

Top Cow Talent Hunt 2012 Art Submission

I would like to take a break from the “Medusa” project this Sunday. Today I will show you the sequential samples I submitted to Top Cow’s talent hunt.

It was September 2012 when I saw the announcement that top cow was conducting a talent hunt. Two writers and two artists would be selected to make a graphic novel or miniseries for top cow. Artists had a sample script to work from. I downloaded the script and the rules.

Now I have to say the only characters that I was familiar with from the Top Cow universe were Witchblade, Darkness and Ian Nottingham. All the other characters from the sample script I have never heard of. I was a bit skeptical at first to enter this particular competition given my complete lack of knowledge and interest for those characters.

Anyway I decided to bite the bullet and get at it. After all it was a big opportunity just to pass on. So I found all the reference I needed and start drawing.

Here are the samples

No I wasn’t one of the lucky two.

Thank you for being here!

Medusa Graphic Novel: Poseidon!

Today I will update you with page 7 from “Medusa”. It features the god of sea Poseidon!

Poseidon was the god of sea, earthquake and storm. He was a chaotic god and (just like an earthquake) he could explode violently at any given moment. Poseidon represents raw unpredictable masculine power. He takes what he wants no questions asked.

This is the page where I introduce Poseidon the first time. I think that a splash page was the best way to go. I strained to convey his chaotic, powerful presence. I wanted him to disrupt the quiet and peaceful continuity from the previous pages.

Here he is the mighty Poseidon!

Medusa Graphic Novel: New Page!

You have already seen the first five pages of the comic. Today I am going to update you with a new page.

If it is your first time here take the time to see what the comic is about: http://panoskamoulakos.blogspot.gr/2013/02/medusa-graphic-novel.html

We have been through the main plot and the characters. What really strikes me about this story is how unfairly Medusa is treated by the gods. Poseidon sexually assaults her; Athena blames her for the act and curses her into becoming a monster! After many years of suffering as a hideous monster petrifying people, gods finally dispatch demigod Perseus to kill her and take her head as a trophy.

The powerful gods play with the lives of mortals as a small kid with his toys. In a way it is a very relative story for today’s standards. Powerful people slipping through the cracks cause no one can touch them. Sometimes innocent people take the fall for others to come through.

Now without any further ado, here is page 6 (pencil, inks, finishes):

The priestesses are inside Parthenon lustrating the temple.

Thanks again for being around!
